Texas at Tyler freshman Laura Lindsey, a Montgomery High School graduate, shot a 3-over 75 on Friday to become the NCAA Division III individual medalist in the women’s golf championships in Destin, Fla.
Lindsey’s total for the four rounds of play was 296, which was four strokes ahead of runner-up Kelsey Morrison of George Fox University.
Lindsey also helped Texas-Tyler finish as the team runner-up with a score of 1,247, eight strokes behind champion Mary Hardin-Baylor. Mary Hardin-Baylor broke a 13-year stranglehold on the team championship by Methodist University.
Lindsey opened the tournament with back-to-back par rounds of 72 before shooting a 77 on Thursday.
Lindsey had a bogey and a double bogey on the front nine Friday before taking another bogey on the 10th hole. She came back with a birdie on No. 12, the first par-5 hole on the back nine. After a bogey on No. 13, she scored an eagle on the other par-5 hole on the back nine, No. 15. Lindsey also bogeyed No. 18.
Morrison closed with a 76 on Friday, but that left her at 300, four strokes behind Lindsey. Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Taylor O’Rear had a final-round score of 73 for a total of 301 in pacing her squad to the team championship.

Collapsed Drain Line

On holes #5 & 17 there were collapsed drain lines some 30 foot below ground. These lines have been replaced so as to continue to provide our guests with the best golf facility in the state. The replacement of these lines required a 5-7 day process of excavating and replacement.
This excavation work is now completed on both holes.
ROAD WIDENING
Two separate mobility projects will result in the widening of FM 2978 and Honea Egypt Road over the next year. The FM 2978 project will be taken on by the Texas Department of Transportation, while Montgomery County has partnered with the Westwood Improvement District to take on Honea Egypt Road.
The Montgomery County project involves widening the portion of Honea Egypt Road from FM 1488 north to Sendera Ranch Drive. The two-lane road will be widened to five lanes.
The Honea Egypt project will soon leave the design phase, according to Craig Doyal, county commissioner in Montgomery County Precinct 2. He said he hopes to see construction start this summer.
The projects are intended to deal with traffic build-up, which has been getting worse over time, Doyal said.
“When a car tries to turn left around Sendera Ranch during peak traffic hours, everything backs up and there’s gridlock,” he said. “Just by going from two lanes to five, we can have a tremendous impact with very little construction.”
A TxDOT project will widen the portion of FM 2978 from Conroe-Huffsmith Road to Dry Creek Road from two lanes to four with a five foot shoulder.
The project left the design phase in March. A contract for construction on the 2.5-mile stretch of road is expected to be awarded in August with construction lasting approximately 20 months, according to Deidrea Samuels, public information officer with TxDOT.
Montgomery County is working with TxDOT to help with some of the preliminary work on the widening near Conroe-Huffsmith Road, Doyal said.
“We’re trying to do everything we can to move that project forward,” he said.
